Gems Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm at St Paul Lutheran Church. Doors are open at 6:00 pm and locked at 6:45 pm.
Special Events are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St Paul Lutheran Church, unless otherwise stated. Doors are open at 8:45 am and locked at 9:15 am

Gems Meeting: January 9 – Sandy Sanders “Quilted Art That Tells a Story”
Gems member and designer at Really Designs, Sandy Sanders will inspire us with techniques and tips for incorporating sentimental memories into quilts. Sandy will show us quilts that tell a story about an event, and she invites members to bring their own quilts that tell a story of memories. www.real-ly.com
Gems Meeting: February 6 – Sue Krause “Great Sets”
Gems member and our favorite Pre-Elect will be showing the concept behind Sharyn Craig’s “Great Sets”. Using orphan blocks, BOM blocks, etc., and putting them together in pleasing arrangements for quilts. Examples of each kind. If anyone has quilts made from the time Sharyn was here (years ago!) they could be encouraged to bring them.
Gems Meeting: March 6 – Stephanie Soebbing from Quilt Addicts Anonymous Blog and shop in Rock Island IL
Stephanie is young and fun and accomplishing great things on the quilting industry. Her trunk show will be based on her book Simple Quilts for the Modern Home www.quiltaddictsanonymous.com
Gems Meeting: April 3 – Becky Wright “Importance of Quilts During the Civil War“
Becky will entertain and educate us on the role of textiles and quilts during the Civil War, focusing on one particular soldier’s quilt. Watch for her book in 2019, Quilts of Love and Valor: Reproduction Quilts and an Authentic Civil War Love Story www.thecivilwarquilter.blogspot.com
Gems Meeting: May 1 – Bonnie Langenfield, “The Art of Realistic Fabric Art” $10 guest fee for lecture
The essential art elements and techniques for realism, e.g. using lines of perspective and use of color for depth.
Workshop May 2: Beginning Landscape, Full day, $55 includes kit
Learn how to use simple perspective, art principles, fabric choices and stitches to make realistic landscapes. Bonnie provides a ‘kit’ with patterns, stabilizer and fabric choices. Each student is free to choose their fabrics and picture arrangement. Project is 8”x10”
Workshop May 3: Dying for Landscape, Full day, $50 includes kit
This class begins with simple dyeing of sheer silk. Then we make a simple landscape picture over the silk. AND you will learn some free motion stitching for the trees and grasses. www.landscapesinfabric.com

Celebrate quilts from Mary Kerr’s newest book, Twisted: Modern Quilts with a Vintage Twist. This fabulous collection features modern quilts that were created using vintage textiles. Join in the fun as Mary shares her unique approach that gives us permission to play with vintage textiles in new and exciting ways.
Workshop June 6: A Wonky Star: Improv with a Vintage Twist, Full Day, $35
Embrace the magic as you are given permission to combine the love of vintage with a fun modern aesthetic. The workshop is packed full of tips for working with vintage fragments and ways to showcase these treasured pieces. Students are encouraged to bring their own vintage blocks and fragments or they may purchase a kit of their choice in class. www.marywkerr.com

Quilts of Iceland – Join Gudrun on a journey through her home country of Iceland as she beautifully documented in her new book.
August 8, Lupine & Aurora, Full Day $45
Focus is on 2 different projects from the book, using fat Quarters and the Stripology ruler.
August 9, Lopapeysa, Hekla & Nordica, Full day $45

Gems Meeting October 2, Tara Curtis “Wefty Needle – Innovative crafts”
Tara inventor of the Wefty Needle will tell us about how new innovations are impacting the quilting industry.
Workshop: October 3 “WEFTY Weaving Panel” Full day, NO SEWING MACHINE NEEDED! $45
Walk through every step of the weaving process to learn solid, ombre, or rainbow stars patterns. Students will make a woven panel 16 x 18 inches, and includes instructions for pillow or a tote bag. www.weftyneedle.com
